Desc: Les petites perles des Caraïbes: Directed by Eric Bacos. Beginning of the journey in Barbados (a coral island): Barbados has an area of 432 square kilometers and a population of 287.000 inhabitants (2019); Barbados became independent on 30 Novembre 1966.This island has been inhabited first by Arawakan Indians, then by Caribbean Indians and later by Portuguese and British people.We see fishermen coming back with the flying fishes.Then in the town of Oistings we go to the fish market where the most popular fishes are the dolphin fishes.In the night the people go to the restaurants and bars and enjoy grilled fishes. Besides the people of Barbados play dominoes (they have been champions in this play).Then a short visit to Bridgetown, the capital: many old colonial buildings have been destroyed by hurricanes.The British colonizers introduce the sugar cane and the cotton in this island: and also they bring African slaves for the plantations.We see also an hippodrome and horse races.We visit a market where there are hot peppers, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and breadfruits.Then we go to Speightstown: a place with a rich vegetation.The northern coast is quite wild, we meet cricket players (British influence).Then in the eastern coast wild seasides: the people enjoy rum and grilled fishes.In the north and in the center of the island many sugar cane plantations; the harvest begins in February and ends in May, there are two main distilleries which produces brown sugar and rums.On the Western coast of Barbados nice beaches where people practice surfing and also kite surfing.In the center of the island we see also polo players, on the polo grounds there are often polo players of Argentina. Then we go to Saint Vincent, a volcanic island.Saint-Vincent and the Grenadines have an area of 369 square kilometers and a population of of 104.332 inhabitants: this country became independent on 27 October 1979.We see how Priscilla is preparing a local pudding made of sweet potatoes, spices, ginger,vanilla, sugar and often with coconut.In Kingstown we visit the botanical garden and notice that the breadfruit tree has been introduced as food in case of famine.At the Peace Memorial Hall the can see square dance music.We visit in the Western coast the Fort Charlotte,built in 1806, with a capacity of 600 soldiers and 34 cannons.Later we see fishermen practicing seine fishing.We go near the Soufriere volcano, a great forest , waterfalls and some fumaroles (last eruption in 2008).In this region the soils are very fertile; banana trees.Then we travel to the island of Bequia: the fishermen are looking there for whales.On the Sundays we can listen to the steel drums.In the wilderness there are sea turtles and we visit an animal rescue center where people care for lost sea turtles and released them later.With sailboats the people can reach the Grenadines archipelago: there are 30 islands but only 12 are inhabited.We travel to the Tobago Cays, a national park : there are islets with mangrove, the park rangers are observing the sea turtles; fishing has been banned and now the fishermen carry the tourists and offer them food, besides there are a colony of Antillean iguanas.
